what is a teaching artist?
There is no universally accepted definition of a teaching artist, though there is a worldwide effort to explore what that might be. Through careful consideration and deliberation, those involved in the RI Teaching Artists Center are choosing to define a teaching artist as:
“a skilled artist and committed educator who draws from his/her creative practice to engage others in learning, thinking, making, and problem-solving.”
The Rhode Island Teaching Artists Center (RITAC) is a collaborative project run by The Gamm Theater and the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts. RITAC promotes and supports the positive impact of teaching artists across the state's various sectors by:
- serving as a bridge between teaching artists and those in need of their services and
- providing physical and virtual spaces for teaching artists to further develop their skills.
